Luke Skywalker joins forces with a Jedi Knight, a cocky pilot, a wookiee and two droids to save the universe from the Empire's world-destroying battle-station, while also attempting to rescue Princess Leia from the evil Darth Vader. John Williams's score for the film was named the greatest score of all time by the American Film Institute in 2005. It has another 38 awards from various other groups, including the Golden Globes, Baftas, Hugo Awards, and the Grammys. Star Wars won 6 oscars the year it came out, and was nominated for 4 others. The film is widely credited with changing the way movies were made in Hollywood, shifting the focus to big blockbusters and franchise films. As the first film in the franchise, A New Hope sets up many of the premises of the Star Wars Universe, along with introducing many of the iconic characters later entrenched in popular culture.
Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope was was first released in 1977 as "Star Wars." It was retitled in 1981 as part of the franchise creation process.
